The Department of Machine Design currently boasts 29 faculty members, including a Changjiang Distinguished Professor recognized by the Ministry of Education, who is also the recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, as well as three other national-level young talents.
In our undergraduate education program, we have a nationally renowned teaching team specializing in “Mechanical Design and Manufacturing”, and a course group “Design Principles and Methods” honored as Jiangsu Province's top-level course. Notably, our textbook, “Fundamentals of Machine Design” (7th edition), received the second prize in the first National Textbook Construction Award. Over the years, our department has garnered second prizes in the National Teaching Achievement Award three times.
In our graduate education program, we have forged collaborations with the Bosch Siemens Home Appliances Corporation, enabling us to operate the SEU-BSH(China) R&D center and postgraduate workstation. Furthermore, we engage in fruitful partnerships with renowned universities worldwide, such as UC Berkeley, Brown University, Vanderbilt University, and the National University of Singapore, to jointly train doctoral students. Annually, we mentor approximately 40 graduate students, many of whom go on to secure positions at higher education institutions, research institutes, high-tech enterprises, and government agencies.
Our scientific research is dedicated to addressing critical issues related to public health and safety, as well as exploring the frontiers of science. Our research fields span tribology, surface science, micro/nano electromechanical sensing and control, robotics, heat transfer, new energy technology, precision manufacturing, and additive manufacturing. In recent years, our research teams have spearheaded over 90 scientific projects, receiving support from esteemed bodies such as the National Key Research and Development Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, among others. Our research progress has been published in many prestigious academic journals including Science, Nature, Nature Nanotechnology, PNAS, JACS, and PRL. Notably, the research group led by Prof. Yunfei Chen was honored with the second prize in the National Natural Science Awards in 2018.
